Our Inspiration...

Four Friends start to receive morbid valentine day cards. Someone out there is stalking them....someone they all spurned when they were younger. And Valentines Day 2001 is the Day she/he gets their revenge.

----------------------------------------------------------

This film is our inspiration as we liked the idea of a guy seeking revenge on girls from his past who rejected him on Valentines day because he was seen as looser. Our plot is different as they aren't linked in intimate ways and we all have personal reasons for bullying him as are character types have diverse motives. The main theme behind the film is love which is why its called 'Valentine' a day where people express their love for one another. Our theme is just twisted revenge as the characters push the protagonist 'One step 2 Far'.

The trailer uses medium shots and diegetic sound to make it seem like they are in an ordinary state where they cant be harmed but the voiceover foreshadows whats about to happen and creates more of an understanding. It also has non diegetic sound which is parallel to the shots used such as when someone gets pulled back and the girl panicking. It uses fast paced shots which fade to black and that's used when there is a iconic scene like when the girl (played by Denise Richards) is screaming for help as the water is rising up.They use a soundbridge that plays until the end to finish the trailer when the name of the film comes up.

The lighting used is low key to make it seem like theres something lurking around and high key which is used for the normal scenes. The target audience of this film is 15 which is similar to ours as there isn't that many gory scenes and swearing is to a minimum also escapism is felt from the audience. The trailer uses a lot of flashes and fades to black and we think this is a key element to make it more dramatic. Its a hybrid slasher genre thats horror/thriller/romance.

Analysis of trailers...

Paranormal Activity

Rated 15 this horror film is a low budget film where a couple move into a suburban home but are disturbed with a demonic presence in the house. Due to technology increasing films now have increasing supernatural killing whereas in the past the use of props was dominant. The conventions used are an unseen threat which is revealed or understood until the end. The film has no new equilibrium and the twist is the girl in the end was the demonic being all along. So sometimes the protagonist can have a hidden agenda which isn't revealed until the end so there is a twist.Props used to create suspense such as doors slamming mysteriously and things breaking unexpectedly. The most common type of suspense horror films use is when there is a jump cut to something unexpected so your attention is forced to focus on a certain thing.

The trailer uses text which zooms in to foreshadow the events.Music used is parallel and sound effects used are sudden to emphasise the shots and what taking place. The mise en scene is usually dark and for this film to be unique and successful the director Oren Peli has used night-vision and is recording the film from the couples point of view which has never been done before so that the audience can experience things at the same time.Due to Paranormal Activity being watched in 3D its even more realistic for the audience when things go flying its coming at the audience and therefore its a more enjoyable experience.

My Bloody Valentine

This horror film rated 18, directed by Patrick Lussieris is about protagonist Tom who returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, however, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame is the only one will believes he's innocent. The trailer uses a lot of jump cuts and fades to black with sound effects of sudden actions and heavy breathing.Flashes quite fast paced shots put together with a voice over. The heartbeat sound effect makes us identify with the victims and shows the fear.

The masked killer is a typical convention which is reinforced to hide the identity of antagonist. The props used for him is a mask a black outfit and an axe as the murder weapon. The lighting used is generally low key lighting. The mise en scene has people with blood on them set in dark places outside as well as indoors. There not much music only sound effect which convey the distress of the characters. This film is the kind where you are made to believe something and at the end there is an unexpected twist and they way it end suggests there could be a sequel as there is no new equilibrium.

  • Another trailer analysis for a low budget film
  • Script

The phantom of the opera research..

The famous unmasking scene which was said to have made the theater patrons scream and faint in 1925.The 1930 version is on the left and the original 1925 version on the right.

Lon Chaney in the role as the phantom

As part of our research we looked at old horror movies from the past from the 1920's to give us more ideas about the genre of horror.

The phantom of the opera was first released in 1925 and is one of the most 'greatest horror' movies released from the past.
The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially deformed phantom who haunts the paris opera house causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the women he loves a star.
It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific self applied make up.

Directed by:Rupert Julian
Produced by: Carl Laemmle
Genre:Horror, drama
Cast: Lon Chaney,Mary Khilibin,Norman Kerry
Certificate: pg
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Release date: 15 November 1925.The phantom Of The Opera was a low budget movie has the technology and camera quality was not as developed then as the 21st century.

Production:
A small production company will form and have an idea for a new movie. They will then have to get funding for this movie.Movies often cost many millions of pounds to make. The produciton company will go to a distributor for this money. If the distributor likes the idea in other words that the film has a winning formula (similar films have been successful before) or that it is so brilliantly original that it amazes them (this is most unlikely to be the case). Also the ideas must meet the conventions of the genres to which it belongs. Then the distributor may well lend the money for the prodction company to make thier film. The distributor can force changes to the idea to demand that certain stars appear in the film.

Competitor analysis..

Carrie (1976)

A similar idea to ours as she is bullied by students in high school and gets fed up to the point where she seeks revenge on them and kills them. The difference with our plot is that the protagonist is a male who is bullied and is hurt and embarrassed by three girls.Whereas Carrie kills her tormenters with her supernatural powers and we will use props and show the victim reactions in different ways.

Distributed by United Artists.

The budget they spent on the film was $1.8 million.

The gross revenue made was $33,800,00.

Was followed by The Rage: Carrie 2

Horror Film History..

Horror is an ancient art form, horror films are movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers, their plots usually involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain. Also due to technology increasing you can view horror films in 3D and its a more enjoyable experience for the audience.

Horror movies from the past are largely based on classic literature of the Gothic/Horror genre such as Dracula,Frankenstein and the Phantom Of The Opera.

Horror films have been dismissed as violent, low budget B movies and exploitation films. There are many genres in horror such as:

  • Body horror- which is graphic destruction or degeneration of the human body this is also movies which include diseases etc.
  • Horror thriller-when you don't find out the killer or villain till the end of the film.
  • Horror comedy (spoof)-a hybridgenre with gory and horror scenes mixed with humour.

------------------------------

  • Jeepers Creepers 2: Production Budget - $17 Million
  • Dawn of the Dead (2004): Production Budget - $26 Million
  • Halloween: Production Budget - $325,000
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Remake):Production Budget - $9.5 Million
  • Saw , Saw2 & Saw 3 : Production Budget between all three was - $15.5 Million

Overview of Paranormal Activity..

Compared to Psycho here we can see that technology has improved massively as the use of props (as killing objects) has decreased and instead there are unseen forces killing people which create enigma codes as the audience don't know what the resolution will be.Distributed by Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks the budget they spent on the movie was $15,000 and the gross revenue was $141,659,096. The use of long continuous shots appear quite frequently in the movie and doesnt follow the protagonist when they move somewhere else.

Overview of Psycho..

Horror is an ancient art form.In the past technology wasn't so developed and was recorded in black and white like Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock). The famous shower scene developed where there was space in the side frame to show thats where the threat is coming from and there diegetic sound coming from the characters screaming and the water dripping. There is no non-diegtic sound at the point when you can see a blurred figure behind the shower curtains until he stabs her there is menacing tone of parrallel music when he stabs her multiple times. A closeup is used to convey the distress through the victims facial expression and back lighting is used so the identity of the killer is hidden a typical horror convention. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures released on June 16th 1960.Budget spent on the film was $806,947 and the gross revenue was $32 million!
